Environmental Health has evolved as science has developed, and we should continue to exploit scientific advancements, further to develop our capacity to protect and enhance the lives of those we serve. This session suggests we look more closely at the Art of Environmental Health, our “bedside manner”. It is what differentiates outstanding practice from the merely adequate. The soft social skills, or “Art” of Environmental Health, ensure the best application of the developing “Science” of Environmental Health, providing elegant and often interesting solutions. It also suggests we are sometimes too eager to throw away the old ways, the tried and tested methods, too ready to see off the premises the retiring Environmental Health Practitioner with tales of how it was in the old days? Why not use the experience of the retirees as our critical friend with valuable local and professional knowledge, well versed in the Art of Environmental Health.
