In the Vancouver Coastal Health area in British Columbia, there are a lot of older pools that were constructed in the 60’s with single main drain that have a very small open area. For the newer pools built after the 70’s, changing out the main drain covers casually has sometimes resulted in higher velocity through the drain covers. This presentation reviews the risks of entrapment hazards in pools arising from the pool recirculation systems. Solutions to reduce the risks and issues arising from implementing the solutions will be considered. Topics include proper drain covers, flow meters and flow calculations will be discussed. Results from a survey carried out in the Metro Vancouver area will also be presented.
